Intro
A classic Okavango game-viewing destination
Chitabe Camp is situated in a private concession area on an island in the south-east of the Okavango Delta. Playing host to a breathtaking mosaic of open floodplains, waterways, marshlands, dry acacia and mopane woodland, riverine forest and open grasslands, the area is famed for its incredible numbers and diversity of wildlife, in particular predators, and remains a responsible custodian in one of the Delta’s highest game concentration areas.
The camp recently reopened after an extensive renovation and rebuild of its elevated walkways and hospitality buildings. The new design features sinuous curves and soft lines inspired by the graceful meandering of the Okavango waterways. Nestling in the natural beauty of Chitabe Island, the walkways now feature low footprint longer spans and a more delicate-looking structure that weaves through the treeline. The main area features both indoor and under-star dining experiences whilst a unique, elevated ‘fire of a million stars’ white Kalahari sand deck forms the central heart of Chitabe. A new lap pool, relaxation lounge and a gym provides guests with healthy exercise opportunities while moments for introspection will be found in the new library. An evaporative cooling system has also been installed in the main areas to offer guests ample cool spaces to escape to during the warmer summer months. The camp’s eight spacious Meru-style tents are built on elevated wooden decks amongst trees. Each tent has twin beds, en-suite facilities and an indoor as well as an outdoor shower. Staying true to its philosophy of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’, all of the hardwood timber from the original structure was re-purposed and used to create the fire of a million stars, decorative cladding and ceilings.

Wildlife
Chitabe Camp is located in the Chitabe Concession, which covers 22 000 hectares of pristine Okavango Delta wilderness. This unique area harbours a massive variety of habitats within close proximity giving rise to a surprising diversity of species. The mix of Okavango and Kalahari makes for an excellent home to an abundant array of herbivores: giraffe, buffalo, red lechwe, tsessebe, impala and elephant, which in turn support the larger predators: lion, leopard, spotted hyaena, cheetah and wild dog (painted hunting dog). Chitabe is located in one of the highest game concentration areas in the Okavango.

Best Value Safari Property
Magnificent in every way!
The guiding was exceptional, best ever of the bush experiences I have ever had - both in terms of knowledge but also in attending to our specific interests.
The tented camp offers both luxuary and a feel of being in the bush with the raised walkway a distinguishing feature of the camp.
Best Ecologically Responsible Safari Property
Impressive facility and effort in reducing environmental footprint, both in terms of energy and water.
This camp has everything - best location for wildlife sightings, great design of property, innovative and ecologically friendly infrastructure, excellent cuisine, wonderful attentive and engaged staff
Best Safari Property Location
The variety of terrain allows for the best variety of top predators - you can see all the Big cats and Wild Dogs in the same day which is incredible.
The Wildlife experience at Chitabe cannot be beaten in the Okvango Deltat
Best Safari Property Location
The concentration of game and in particular predators at Chitabe always ensures my visits to Chitabe are action packed.
Best Value Safari Property
In my opinion, Chitabe is a preferred lodge because it offers an unparalleled game experience for a lower price than other more expensive lodges which generally have an inferior game experience.
