Wildlife
Tsavo's major attraction is its large herd of elephants. Tsavo has over 12,000 elephants, which is 1/3 of the total population of Kenya's elephants. The park is also home to one of the most beautiful antelopes, the Lesser Kuddu with spiral horns and white striped coats. Tsavo West boasts over 75 mammal species. From primates (yellow baboons, vervet and sky monkeys and galagos), to elephant shrews and the hyrax (the closest living relative to the elephant), numerous bat species and insect-eating animals, such as golden moles, otter and the hedgehog. There are hyenas, the African wild dog, jackals, lions, cheetahs, as welll as the elusive leopard. Hippos, zebras (both Burchell's and Grevy's), bufallo, dikdik, impala and the eland, which is the biggest of all antelopes, are found in the park too.
Over 400 bird species have been recorded in Tsavo West, of which some migrate over the park between October and January. To name a few, bird species vary from the most beautiful ones such as the Superb Starling, sunbirds, the red-head weaver, the gorgeous golden palm weaver, the red-and-yellow barbets and the lilac breasted roller-one of the most photographed bird in the world.
