Intro
Nested within the protected woodlands of Mt. Meru near the Momella meadow, Hatari is one of the very few properties located inside the Arusha National Park.
With a fun historical significance, this legendary bush lodge was the setting for the famed 1963 film Hatari starring John Wayne, Elsa Martinelli and Hardy Krüger.
Now in care of the Gabriel family, the legacy of Hatari grows fuller with new memories, stronger community and natural harmony.
Highlights
Hatari Lodge is dedicated to responsible tourism, sustainable living and social responsibility.
All our furnishings are produced on-site by a talented collection of artisans who also gain access to wider markets through our collaborative programs.
Our meals are freshly prepared with fresh produce that is locally sourced and grown in surrounding farms.
We have tailormade experiences that allow one to enjoy the magic between two mountains. Two of the natural world’s most famous sisters, Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru are separated by only 348 kilometres and can be enjoyed slope to slope within an hour and a half's drive.
Our roots in Africa stretch deep and spread wide- we’ve travelled its many landscapes and learned some of its best secrets. We look forward to sharing them with you.
Need To Know
Hatari Lodge is located at 1,600 meters above sea level and is therefore free of malaria. It is a very safe destination due to its proximity to Arusha city, which is about an hour drive away. Less than an hour's journey from Kilimanjaro Airport.
Safaris
A safari, no doubt, is one of the greatest and most impressive travel experiences in the world, whether done by jeep, on foot, by boat, by plane or on horseback. During your stay at Hatari Lodge you may take advantage of our activities such as hiking in the rainforest and into Mount Meru’s crater, canoeing, guided walks along the river, following historic trails or enjoying a picnic at the waterfall. All these activities provide different perspective by which to discover the beauty of our natural and cultural heritage.
Wildlife
Experience African wildlife close up (including giraffe, warthogs and small antelope) roaming freely around this Oscar-nominated historical location.

New - our Hatari Villas: The Hatari Villas will open their doors to a more private or 'multi generational' orientated stay at the foot of Mt Meru. They are suitable for honeymoons! and even more so for families or friends travelling together in a group of up to 6.
Each Villa consists of 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms which can be separated as the two bedrooms are independent from each other. The bigger room would then make use of the smaller bathroom and the smaller room will make use of the bigger bathroom. The bigger bathroom has two basins, a separate shower and a bathtub and a toilet.
The smaller bathroom has one basin, one shower and a toilet. The bigger room has a fireplace and overlooks Mt Meru. The smaller room has no fire place and overlooks Mt Kilimanjaro. Both rooms have a private veranda overlooking one of the two mountains

Season
Hatari Lodge enjoys mild but still comfortably warm temperatures. The temperature rarely exceeds 30 degrees Celsius, however early morning hours during the months of May to October may be chilly, making a warm jacket a necessity. By noon, weather conditions are again "African", with temperatures easily rising above the 20 to 25 degree mark. During the so-called dry season in Tanzania the area around Hatari Lodge and the whole of Arusha National Park is watered by morning mists so is always green, attracting wildlife all year round. Hatari Lodge and the park with its all-weather roads can therefore be visited at all times. In the months of April and May the "big rains" may restrict walking safaris and wet weather clothing is recommended.
