Before You Go

Here are some quick tips on things to know and prepare for before you hop off for the most exciting getaway. These tips would prove really helpful for people who are entirely new to experiencing African wildlife and can serve as a checklist for experienced adventure seekers.

Before you travel to Africa:

Passport Requirements:

  • Make sure you check your passport validity and visa requirements prior to your travel date.
  • In order to travel to Africa, you need to have two blank passport pages for each country that you will visit during travel for their departure and entry stamps. So make sure you have two pages for each country.
  • Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after your travel date.

Health Vaccinations and Precautions:

  • Before traveling to Africa, you should make an appointment with your doctor in order to make sure that you have all the necessary vaccinations. It is recommended that you visit your doctor and make him aware of your travel in advance so he can keep your vaccinations updated and can suggest you on any additional vaccination that you may need.
  • For those who are traveling from certain countries that are declared yellow fever endemic regions, you would need to have a yellow fever vaccine. A proof for this vaccination is essential and you will be required to show it upon arrival in Tanzania. It is necessary to get this certificate 10 days prior to your travel.
  • An anti-malaria may be recommended by your doctor in order to avoid the risk of malaria.
  • In a wildlife safari, you will be spending a lot of time surrounded by animals. Although the chances are very low of being bitten by any of those animals your doctor may recommend a rabies vaccination. Remember that rabies vaccine is expensive and painful but rabies (untreated) itself is fatal.

Buy Travel Insurance:

  • Camp organizers strongly recommend you buy comprehensive reliable travel insurance coverage including everything from personal to medical or any kind of trip/travel emergency.

What to Pack and Bring?

  • Casual, comfortable and easy to wash and wear clothes are recommended.
  • Add all neutral colors of clothing including beige, khaki, green or others.
  • Avoid bringing dark clothing as it attracts mosquitoes and tsetse flies.
  • T-shirts and long sleeves shirts (protection against the sun).
  • Sturdy cotton shorts, safari trousers, and lightweight pants.
  • Jeans, jacket and sweater for early morning, evening and cooler days.
  • Waterproof jacket.
  • Comfortable shoes.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
  • Bug repellent.
  • Lip balm, moisturizer, and eye drops.
  • Camera and binoculars.
  • AC/DC converter for your electronic devices.
  • Medications (malaria, anti-diarrheal, rehydration, painkillers, anti-allergies, motion sickness, and others).
  • First-Aid box with things like bandages, antiseptic cream, medications (both general and prescribed, if any).

The climate in Serengeti, in general, is usually pleasant and it remains moderate throughout the year. It is warm and humid during days but in early mornings and at nights; it tends to get cool.

Season

Kenzan Tented Camp operates from June till November and then moves to the Ndutu Southern Serengeti where it operates from December till March. With this camp being strategically located, you will get to see the unique enclave of raw wilderness all around the park. The best time, however, is from July till October when the famous migration crossing of the popular wildebeest inhabitants can be witnessed.

June – June is the time where the Great Migration crosses the Grumeti River. The migration splits and herds spread out as they enter the Grumeti Reserve. The herds fear to enter the river not only for the harsh waters and steep banks but for the population of Nile crocodiles who lie under waiting to have their teeth on the warm meat of herds. The game drives here could be amazingly rewarding with herds heading and trailing for around 3 hours or more. June is the end of rains here and since there would be enough water, the crossings could be really dramatic.

July & August – Another best time to see the interesting crossings in this region is the hot and humid month of July and August where the dry season goes into overdrive. In the search of lush green land, wildebeest herds continue to travel and attempt to cross the dangerous rivers.

September – This could be your last chance to view the Great Migration in Central Serengeti as the weather continues to remain dry and the majority of the herds can be seen feasting on the lush green land resources in the region before traveling towards North. The Northern Serengeti can be approached with a few hours game drive from Central region and there you can spot all the big-fives that Serengeti National Park is best known for.

October – The dry season is about to reach its climax and weather turns mild. Time is for herds to return back in the Serengeti and as they move through east from Loliondo; they can be easily spotted from the camp. Early rains can be expected during this month throughout the region.
