Highlights
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy ~ A world renowned wildlife conservancy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a leading rhino and community-based conservancy.
Joint Operations Centre ~ A revolutionary new data system - Domain Awareness System (DAS) - Vulcan, the high-tech and philanthropy-focused company founded by Paul G. Allen, created the new system specifically to help combat poaching and enhance wildlife management on a large scale across a vast area. Lewa Conservancy is now the
communications hub for the region encompassing Borana and all the Northern Rangeland Trust Conservancies and is central to the DAS operation.
Wildlife
- Lewa holds over 10% of Kenya’s black rhino population and about 15% of Kenya’s white rhino population. Over 40% of the fulltime employees on Lewa are rangers who undertake daily patrols around the reserve, monitoring the wildlife, specifically the rhinos.
- It holds the largest single population of critically endangered Grevy’s zebra.
- As well as being renowned for its rhinos and Grevy’s zebra, Lewa hosts an abundance of other species, including elephant, lion, cheetah, leopard and buffalo.
