All you need to know

Intro

Laragai House is found on the foothills of the mighty Mount Kenya, with the snow-tipped peaks and glaciers to the south and a panorama of mountains and rugged desert to the north. Originally built as a country retreat by Lords Valentine and Michael Cecil, Laragai offers unparalleled seclusion and comfort in a breathtaking setting. This private home, owned by George and Lucilla Stephenson, is only booked on an exclusive-use basis.

Highlights

Guests have full exclusivity to Borana’s 32,000 acres of protected wilderness, and can encounter extraordinary scenes of wildlife in their original, untainted environment on foot, on horse-back, by helicopter, on mountain bikes or even on night drives in open safari vehicles. Borana recently opened up as a rhino sanctuary and is now home to 21 Black Rhino.

Need To Know

Laragai House is booked on an exclusive use basis, where only one party can take the house at any one time. Borana Conservancy has an airstrip where chartered flights can land, just 15 minutes away from the House. There is also a helicopter landing site at the house. Borana is at an altitude of 6000ft, and is therefore malaria free.

Safaris

Experience the wildlife and wilderness of Borana Conservancy on game drives, bush walks, horse riding safaris, helicopter flights, mountain biking and night drives. Game drives and night drives: Vehicles are open-air, custom-built, four-wheel drive, and are fitted with radios, spotlights and blankets for the evenings. Borana’s drivers and guides have extensive local knowledge of the area, as well as professional training and very sharp eyes – guests are guaranteed an exciting and informative experience. Since Borana is private property, there are no game park rules and no one else can obscure your view at big game sightings. Guided bush walks: Walking is a very personal and peaceful way to see wildlife; the slower pace means that the finer details of the bush are enhanced and not easily missed, and guests can experience all shapes and sizes of the wildlife, flora and fauna, lead by the experienced guides. Horse riding: Borana has two stables, one with ex-polo ponies suitable for experienced riders, and one with Ethiopian ponies, suitable for children and inexperienced riders. The stables use mostly English saddles, although a western saddle is available upon request. Rides usually leave in the early morning or late afternoon, and can be combined with bush picnics or a sundowner. Pride Rock: Borana is home to the original Pride Rock, which inspired the animators of the Disney feature film, The Lion King. Walking up to Pride Rock for a picnic or a sundowner is a must-do activity on Borana. Mountain biking: Borana is a spectacular environment in which to cycle. Groups of up to 6 bikers can head off lead by an experienced guide. Bush meals and sundowners: Having a bush breakfasts along the river under the trees, or a bush dinner under the stars with a big fire are very popular activities on Borana. Most days are topped off with a toast to the sunset somewhere on the ranch with a beautiful view. Helicopter excursions: Scenic helicopter rides and fishing trips are easily organized from Borana with Tropic Air, up to Mount Kenya, to Lake Turkana or over the beautiful and varied landscape of the nearby area. Fly camping: For a great bush experience spend the night in a comfortable tented camp anywhere on the ranch. Conservation Activities: There is always plenty going on on the conservancy to get involved with. Join one of the security rangers on their daily monitoring, track and help identify our pride of resident lion, rise early and assist locating our Black Rhino using telemetry tracking devices.

Wildlife

Home to the Big 5 – leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino, as well as other abundant wildlife and endangered species such as wild dog, patas monkeys, striped hyena and a myriad of over 300 species of bird, Borana is a teeming hub of life.
