Need To Know
The private 65,000 acre wildlife conservancy of the Lewa Wilderness Trust has a large portion of Kenya’s black and white rhino and the single largest population of Grevy’s zebra in the world. Lewa reinvests all profits generated from tourism into its core programmes.
There is an archaeological site on Lewa, which is rich in tools used by prehistoric man. It is thought the site was an “artisan’s shop”, where the tools were made, as there are so many that a site for domestic use is unlikely. The Museums of Kenya (where the pre-history department was made famous by the Leakey family), have shared their findings of the site with the guides on Lewa.
Safaris
Driving, walking, riding, camel trekking. Guides receive outstanding training from courses by the Museums of Kenya about Lewa’s archaeological sites, to current research being done on the conservancy. From game drives, bush walks, horse-riding and camel trekking, to educational talks on the history and the conservancy, guests can truly immerse themselves in the spirit of Lewa.
Wildlife
Lewa holds 10% of Kenya’s black rhinos, 15% of Kenya’s white rhinos and the world’s largest single population of Grevy’s zebra. Additionally, there are elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes and sitatungas.
