Intro

Located in the Royal Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho within the Ts’ehlanyane National Park, Maliba Mountain Lodge is a 5-star mountain retreat set in a pristine sub-alpine wilderness valley deep in the heart of Lesotho’s breath-taking mountains. Maliba Mountain Lodge is the first 5-star lodge in Lesotho and it has set the
benchmark for future Lesotho Tourism ventures. Over 5600 hectares of extremely rugged wilderness mountain terrain is protected within this park, which includes one of the very few remaining indigenous woodlands in Lesotho. Unlike most of Lesotho, the park has plenty of remnant vegetation dominated by mature Che Che trees all of which
has historical significance to the Basotho people. Maliba will eventually boast the highest sub-alpine botanical garden in Africa, designed by renowned South African botanist Dr Elsa Pooley. Six exclusive luxury Basotho-style chalets each offer private viewing decks stretching into the heart of the scenic woodland mountains. Maliba is a 4½ drive from Johannesburg and an hour and 2 hours drive from Maseru
International Airport, making it an easily accessible retreat for both business and leisure travel.

Maliba that it is unrivalled anywhere else.

Need To Know

Maliba Mountain Lodge has been five years in the making. Two Australians, Nick King and Chris McEvoy, who have business interests in South Africa, along with local Lesotho Engineer Stephen Phasaki dreamt of building an up market lodge in
Lesotho. They identified the perfect site which had previously had been used as a strategic access point to the multimilliondollar tunnel that supplies water from Katse dam in the Lesotho highlands to South Africa. This site is in the middle of a
pristine valley within Ts’ehlanyane National Park surrounded by spectacular mountains and a number of rivers. Chris, Nick and Stephen approached the Lesotho highlands water commission with a business proposal to build the first 5-
star lodge in Lesotho on this site. After much consultation with the various departments within the Lesotho government, contracts were signed in late 2005 which granted a 60-year lease. The lodge was named Maliba Mountain Lodge which
related to the fact that the lodge is located near the junction of 3 major rivers. A local architect was commissioned to develop the design and structural drawings. Construction started in March 2006. Wherever possible, workers were recruited
from the local villages and at its peak over 80 workers were employed on site. Many of those staff now assists in the running and maintenance at Maliba. Maliba management has had great support from the Lesotho ministry of tourism to see there dream become reality. Landscaping and planting will be completed in the summer of 2009.
The establishment of what we believe will be the highest sub-alpine botanical garden in the world has already commenced. Other improvements, to be completed in the future include a day spa and beauty therapy facility as well as outpost in the
mountains where adventurous guests can trek and be comfortably looked after in its seasonal camp.
