The family members comprise of the exlusive-use Owner’s House (2-bedrooms), River House (3-bedrooms), and Farm House (5-bedrooms) in the malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve. Further south, 3 hours from Cape Town along the Garden Route in the 36,000 ha De Hoop Nature Reserve we offer the exclusive-use Ocean House (4-bedrooms) as well as the 5-suite Morukuru Beach Lodge. In Sandton (Johannesburg) we offer AtholPlace Hotel & Villa, part of Relais & Chateaux and an intimate boutique hotel with just 9 suites and a 4-bedroom private villa. All of our properties are sophisticated yet unpretentious and we encourage barefoot luxury, designed to spend quality time with friends and family, in pristine areas of natural beauty. When booking our exclusive-use houses all meals, drinks and activities are included, as well as a full complement of staff and a private vehicle.
AtholPlace Hotel & Villa and Morukuru Beach Lodge are small boutique properties catering for couples as well as small families.
Need To Know
When booking one of our exclusive-use houses our guests can enjoy the 'Morukuru Freedom Concept'. This means: No schedules, no pressure. All activities are tailored around the guests preferences. Timings are flexible for meals and activities and the guests can discuss their requirements and preferences with their hosts. We encourage guests to complete the 'Wish List' which they will receive well before arrival, as that enables us to tailor make their stay as much as possible.
AtholPlace Hotel & Villa and Morukuru Beach Lodge operate as a hotel / lodge, which means timings for meals and activities is more structured.
Safaris
Morukuru Family offers the traditional bush safaris in Madikwe Game Reserve and land based marine safaris in the De Hoop Nature Reserve. The ocean in front of De Hoop Nature Reserve is a Marine Protected Area, which means no boating / fishing allowed in a 3 nautical Mile zone from the coast.
In Madikwe Game Reserve we offer game-drives as well as walking safaris. For children under 16 we can arrange nature walks in a safe and protected fenced in area.
Wildlife
Madikwe Game Reserve not ony offers the Big Five, but also offers good opportunities to see the African Wild Dogs and Cheetah.
De Hoop Nature Reserve is a protected breeding ground for Southern Right Whales, but our guests can also see dolphins and lots of other smaller marine creatures. On land the reserve offers big herds of Eland, as well as Bontebok and Cape Mountain Zebra.

At Morukuru Beach Lodge one child under 16 can share a suite with maximum 2 adults, at a discounted rate. For families with 2 or 3 children it is necessary to book 2 suites, the second suite at a discounted rate for up to 3 children under 16.
At AtholPlace Hotel & Villa one child under 12 can share a Superior Suite with maximum 2 adults.
We also offer the option for 2 interleading Deluxe Suites for families. The second suite for max 3 children under 12 years is offered at 40% discount.

A typical Mediterranean climate prevails in the region; summers are warm and winters mild. The annual rainfall is about 380 mm and August is usually the wettest month. Sea mists also occur. The most frequent summer winds are east, west and southeast, while westerly and south-westerly winds prevail in winter.
