Intro

Deep within a riverine forest minutes from Jomo Kenyatta Airport, Wilson Airport and Nairobi City is a true wilderness experience. Visitors can arrive into Kenya and get ‘straight under canvas’ within 30 minutes of leaving the airport. Nairobi Tented Camp is an authentic tented camp in the heart of Nairobi National Park.

International visitors will leave Jomo Kenyatta airport and within minutes start their wildlife encounter, with the last 20 minutes of their short half an hour journey filled with the excitement of their first game drive in Kenya.

Whether you are in Nairobi for tourism, a night stopover, international business or conferences, producing a film or simply looking for a weekend break as a resident, Nairobi Tented Camp has something for everyone.

Highlights

It is the first accommodation of any sort to be allowed inside the Nairobi national Park.

Nairobi National Park is a unique safari destination. There isn’t anywhere else in the world like it; a wilderness escape where you can savour the thrill of tented safari accomodation in the heart of thick bushland and  right on the doorstep of Nairobi City.

Nairobi National Park is a classic savannah park containing stunning African upland landscapes; a true gem, next to the vibrant global city that is Nairobi… As Kenya’s oldest National Park it is unique, full of history (and wildlife) and a must see destination for anyone living in or visiting Kenya.

Need To Know

Nairobi is Africa’s third largest city and the regional hub for East Africa. It is also the only city in the world to boast a 12,000-hectare park (117 square kilometres), teaming with wildlife, right on its doorstep.

Safaris

Your day in Nairobi Tented Camp starts with a freshly brewed hot drink bought to your tent before setting off for that famous safari tradition – an early morning game drive. Be lucky enough to catch the first rays of early morning sun as they burn off the nightly dusting of dew and stirs the plains game gently to life.

After a morning potentially filled with sightings of giraffe, buffalo and leopard return to camp for more warming cups of coffee, freshly baked breads and a hearty cooked breakfast. The camp is made up of eight double accommodation tents and a central mess tent, from which meals will be served. In the afternoon backgammon games might be enjoyed or a good read can be found from one of the many books in the library.

All meals are carefully crafted to compliment bush living without sacrificing on quality and there is nothing more blissful than sleeping off your three-course lunch in a swaying hammock under the shade of an olive tree.

As the day cools and the sun starts its journey West it will be time for another game drive – a chance to catch that evasive moment where a lion might decide it’s time to feast. Return to camp to drinks and stories around the campfire, before dinner under the vast African star lit sky and ultimately retreating to bed.

Wildlife

With sweeping plains on one side and Nairobi city on the other, Nairobi National Park is a wildlife haven unlike any other, with virtually guaranteed sightings of rhino a reason in itself to visit,.

Rolling plains, riverine woodland and thick bush lined valleys are just some of Nairobi National Park’s varied habitats. With its many entrances Nairobi National Park is easily accessible from all of Nairobi whether arriving into Jomo Kenyatta Airport, from Wilson airport or travelling South, from the city itself.

It is not only approachable for human visitors; its unfenced southern boundary means that it also provides a welcome dry-season refuge for migratory species. In fact 4000 zebra, 1000 wildebeest, 14 species of antelope (including eland and kongoni) all call the Nairobi National Park their home at some point throughout the year. In turn they attract animals further up the food chain. An estimated population of nearly 40 lion rub shoulders with good numbers of leopard and spotted hyena, as well as the occasional cheetah and the elusive aardwolf. Click Here for a full list of animals in Nairobi National Park

The Park is also an acclaimed Rhino Sanctuary, best known for it’s breeding population of over 50 Black (or Browse) rhino, recently joined by 11 White (or Grass rhino) translocated from Nakuru National Park.
Some of the Park’s smaller, but just as thrilling, inhabitants include 527 species of birds, (from the heaviest flying bird – the Kori Bustard, to the magnificent forest raptor – the Crowned eagle), innumerable species of amphibians, reptiles, insects and plants, all of which thrive in the grasslands, forests, rocky valleys, dry forests and the numerous seasonal and permanent wetlands that make Nairobi National Park so special.
