All you need to know

Intro

Established by pioneer Paul Oliver in 1992 this camp is for safari enthusiasts wanting more than the postcard-snaps of the Big Five. Set in the secluded Tarangire National Park, it’s a camp that celebrates back-to-basics luxury in one of the most uncrowded corners of East Africa.

Highlights

Away from camp, Tarangire offers a wilderness experience that’s often lacking in the more famous reserves further north. Night drives, walking safaris and wilderness 'fly camps' are all on offer in this slice of untamed Tanzania, where some of the best guides in the business lead you through a corner of Africa that offers everything from herds of buffalo to forests of baobabs.

Exclusive location in the remote southern region of Tarangire with quick access to the Silale swamps

Renowned walking safaris and wilderness fly camping

Fantastic resident wildlife, including big cats, buffalo and elephant

Strikingly beautiful & unique landscape filled with baobabs

Need To Know

Apart from the focus on tracking rather than trophies, Ernest Hemingway would have fitted right in at Oliver’s Camp. Situated in the southern reaches of Tanzania’s remote Tarangire National Park, Oliver’s Camp and Little Oliver's are an echo of the trailblazing camps that first pioneered East African safaris. There’s certainly no shortage of creature comforts, but this is a camp for safari adventurers wanting more than the postcard-snaps of the Big Five. It’s for those who want to feel the dust of Africa beneath their boots on a walking safari, drink in the cool moist air of a night drive, and have the scent of warm rain on hot earth fill their nostrils. This is Africa, untamed... just as it should be.

Safaris

Set in the remote wilderness zone in the south of the Park, away from the more crowded north, Oliver’s is also perfectly situated to ensure a year-round Tanzania safari experience as each passing season paints Tarangire in vibrant new colours.

Wildlife

Tarangire boasts large herds of elephant and buffalo, plus a large concentration of big cats and arguably the best bird diversity in East Africa with more than 500 species. But there’s more to Tarangire than the game and birds. This rugged landscape offers a unique safari backdrop that transforms from rolling grasslands and vibrant swamps to forests of enigmatic baobab trees; according to legend, planted ‘upside down’ for growing too tall and proud.

Accommodation

At Oliver’s the 10 en-suite safari tents offer bush luxury without superfluous frills; the spacious outdoor shower perhaps the one extravagance you’ll happily allow. It’s a camp where the blood-red leather armchairs match the ochre soils beyond the decking; where headboards are hand-carved from African mahogany and baobab trees puncture the horizon from your private veranda. Come nightfall, little more than canvas separates your king-size bed from the restless wilderness beyond. Meals are taken communally at the main lodge, while around the campfire whiskies are poured and safari tales told late into the night.
