All you need to know

Intro

Zikomo Safari is in Zambia, across the river from South Luangwa National Park. It is set amidst an ancient valley filled with diverse African wildlife. This peaceful eco lodge in the African bush offers spacious accommodations: comfortable handcrafted chalets, or, if you are self-driving, an expansive campground on the riverbank.

Our Main Block offers a fine restaurant, bar and gathering place overlooking the swimming pool and the sprawling flood plain of the tranquil hippo filled Luangwa River

Only a forty-five (45) minute drive from Mfuwe International Airport, this affordable eco lodge is in an area away from other safari lodges, camps and accommodations. Zikomo Safari camp is spread under a canopy of enormous shade trees on the banks of the Luangwa River. Zikomo’s placement in the isolated Nsefu sector allows guests immediate access to one of the least crowded and most wildlife rich areas in the world.

Safaris

At 05:15 our security guards will give you a wake up call by GENTLY knocking on your door.

At 05:30 breakfast awaits you in front of a campfire at our Boma area. Juice, coffee, pancakes, Oatmeal and fruit get you ready for your drive at 06:00

From 06:00 to 08:00 the early morning air bursts with songs of one of over 450 species of birds in the area greeting the day and mammals grazing with their young Along the Luangwa River.

At 08:00 we stop for a coffee/tea and snack break, after our refreshments we continue our drive to see the magnificent wildlife of the Luangwa valley.

We come back to the camp at around 10:00 to 11:00 (depending on the sightings) and lunch is served by the pool at 11:30.

After lunch you are free to catch up with a nap, or a walk around the camp, a swim in the pool or play a game of backgammon in the lounge.

At 15:30 we meet for African tea and cakes and go out at 16:00 for our evening drive.

At sunset we will take a relaxing stop to admire the incredible sunsets (or as it is known in Africa “a sundowner”). To have a gin & tonic, a beer or a soda and a small snack before continuing our drive into the night. Night drives allow us to catch a glimpse into the life of predators of the African night who are on the hunt and whether it is a lone leopard, a pride of lions or a pack of wild dogs, it is always an incredible experience to view a hunt or just to see these magnificent animals in their element.

We come back to the lights of Zikomo at anywhere from 19:00 to 20:00 and dinner under the stars await.

After dinner and cocktails a game of pool, a night swim or just a hot chocolate ends another perfect day in our little paradise.

Wildlife

Located in eastern Zambia, the southernmost of three national parks in the valley of the Luangwa River, is a world-renowned wildlife haven. Concentrations of game along the meandering Luangwa River and its lagoons are amongst the most intense in Africa. The river teems with hippo and crocodile and provides a lifeline for one of the greatest diversities of habitat and wildlife, supporting more than 60 species of mammals and over 400 species of birds.

It supports large populations of Thornicroft’s giraffe, and herds of elephants and Cape buffaloes often several hundred strong. It is one of the best-known national parks in Africa for walking safaris. Founded as a game reserve in 1938, it became a national park in 1972 and now covers 9,050 km2.
