All you need to know

Intro

Sand Rivers is situated in the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve which is the second largest protected wilderness area in the world. Our lodge is so much part of the Rufiji’s ebb and flow that it seems almost moored on the banks, with one side entirely open to the river. Views across its brown, swirling waters call to mind adventure movies from another time. Indeed, in the early days, we pioneered legendary foot safaris here, and we still make life in and around the lodge  as action-packed and exciting as the fizzing natural world around it.

Highlights
  • An extraordinary location on the banks of the Rufiji River, far from other lodges - we seldom see another car.
  • Explore this vast wildlife area on foot, by boat, in open game drive vehicles.
  • We specialise in getting under the skin of this area - taking things slowly, creeping up to animals unobserved - a genuine African safari experience.
  • Picnic breastfasts on a sandbar in the Rufiji while on a boat trip to Stiegler's Gorge, lunch at the hot springs, sundowners on Lizzie's Hill with a beautiful view.
  • A night fly-camping under the stars in a mosquito netting tent (needs to be booked in advance, attracts an additional charge).
  • Entirely open-fronted rooms - sounds of the birds and hippos, close to nature.
  • A warm, friendly team of staff and expert guides.
Need To Know
  • LOCATION: In the vast Selous Game Reserve of southern Tanzania.
  • HOW TO GET THERE: There are numerous daily flights to our airstrip (Kiba) from Dar es Salaam,  Ruaha, Zanzibar and northern Tanzania.
  • SETTING: Right on the banks of the Rufiji River, with the lodge following the escarpment up and around a lazy bend.
Safaris

Sand Rivers Selous combines beautifully with Kigelia Ruaha and/or Zanzibar.  There are regular flights between the Selous and Dar es Salaam and Ruaha, from which there are also flight schedules to the northern parks and to Katavi in the west. Please contact us for more advice on how to include Sand Rivers Selous in an itinerary.

Wildlife

Great resident game year round with regular lion and buffalo sightings. Lots of hippo action in the river in front of camp, and also fairly regular sightings of wild dog.
